Let’s start making a Super Mario Thwomp costume
Cut out the side, bottom, and top trims out of the medium gray felt and the spikes out of the dark gray felt.
Cut four 15”x 15” squares out of the light gray felt. Iron on the interfacing on two squares and the stabilizer on the other two. It doesn’t matter what side of felt you iron the interfacing/stabilizers on. Both sides of felt look the same, there is no wrong or right side.
Cut out 4 – 3”x 8” and 2 – 3”x 14” rectangles out of the light gray felt. Cut 4 – 2.5” and 2 – 4” long Velcro. These will work as straps on the shoulders and one between legs.
Fold in half and pin all the rectangle pieces. Thread your machine with a light gray thread. Using a zigzag stitch, stitch the raw edges together.
Sew on Velcro in pairs closer to the folded edges, two hook sides on one piece, and loop sides on the other piece.
Measure out and mark the middle and 3” from the bottom on the felt squares (with ironed on stabilizer on the back). Mark the middle of the overlocked short edge of the longer straps. Using a zigzag stitch, stitch just the short edges of the straps in place. Make sure one strap with Velcro is up and the other with Velcro down.
Pin and zigzag stitch the side, top and bottom trims to one of the felt squares with the interfacing on the back.
Thread your machine with black thread. Cut the eyes – eyebrows and mouth out of the black felt and using a zigzag stitch, stitch to the felt square with trims around.
Now, thread your machine with white thread. Cut the upper, lower jaw and the eyes out of white felt. Using a zigzag stitch, stitch on as shown in the photo.
I know! You need to thread your machine with red thread and stitch the red eye pieces you cut out of red felt.
We are back to threading your machine with black thread again. Cut out the black pupils from black felt and use a zigzag stitch. Mark the teeth lines and sew from one point to the other using a straight stitch. Ta-Da! You just made Thwomp’s face!
I promise, you are threading your machine the last time for this project, with light gray thread again! Align and pin the face square and one of the squares with the long straps, interfacing – stabilizer sides together. Pin two of the short straps between the squares on top, about 2.5” from sides. Using a zigzag stitch, stitch square edges around. Make sure the Velcro on the straps goes in the same direction and you sew on straps with the same side of Velcro to one square. Let’s say you just stitched straps with the hook side of Velcro. Repeat this step with the other felt squares and two short straps. Make sure when you are stitching the square pieces together and the spikes, not to stitch through the longer straps.
You are almost done! The last thing you have to do is pin and zigzag stitch the spikes to the facepiece.
I think adding the longer straps to go between the legs will keep the costume on the baby in place. Don’t you agree?
There, you just made a Super Mario Thwomp Costume!
