Learn how to sew a fleece balaclava that is great for winter sports! My balaclava sewing tutorial includes a fleece beanie sewing pattern and gaiter face mask sewing pattern as well!
I wrote my tutorial on how to sew a fleece balaclava after our last skiing adventure. So, my kids and I were getting ready for another skiing trip but this time the temperature was supposed to be below zero. I needed balaclavas to keep our heads warm.
Since I already had the gaiter face mask sewing pattern, I designed a fleece beanie sewing pattern to go with it. It makes a warm and stylish balaclava two-piece set. The double-layered gaiter face mask keeps your face, neck, and chest warm as well. And the one-layered fleece beanie fits nicely under the helmet protecting your head from the cold weather. I find the two-piece balaclava more practical and warmer than the one-piece ones you can buy. If you are not skiing, you still can keep the beanie and the gaiter on. I like it because the beanie covers my messed-up hair, lol. And, here is the proof in the picture. My daughter enjoying a hot chocolate break in her stylish balaclava.

Step 1. First, cut the hat piece on fold as it states on the pattern.
Step 2. Next, fold the hat piece right side together and align the raw edges. Then, stitch just the outer edges together.
Step 3. Align the other edges together and stitch.
Step 4. Fold the bottom of the hat to the wrong side as much as needed. Then, using a knit stitch, stitch the hem along to the raw edge.
As you see in the picture the beanie fits nicely under the helmet. And, the gaiter stays under the back of the helmet as well.
Also, the goggles fit perfectly on the face, over the fleece balaclava pieces.
