Learn how to DIY Mistletoe Wreath to decorate your home for Valentine’s Day! Follow a step by step tutorial and make a beautiful mistletoe felt wreath! Also, it makes a perfect Christmas decor project idea!

I love Christmas season and I would like to keep Christmas decorations as long as possible, to some extent of course 😊. And, that is why I designed the DIY mistletoe wreath. It not only decorates my home for Valentine’s Day but also makes Christmas decor stay longer. Read an interesting and nicely fact-based article about mistletoe that I found. You’ll learn the meaning and why we kiss under the mistletoe parasite plant 😊.

So, keeping it short, mistletoe is a plant that grows on a range of trees including willow, apple, and oak trees. Many ancient cultures prized mistletoe for its healing properties and the tradition of hanging it in the house goes back to the times of the ancient Druids. It is supposed to possess mystical powers that bring good luck to the household and wards off evil spirits. Also, it was used as a sign of love and friendship in Norse mythology.

Putting all the facts and meaning together I thought that a mistletoe wreath would work as a Valentine’s Day decoration. So, let’s get ready for DIY a felt mistletoe wreath. Since the wreath project calls for a bigger number of small pieces it would be great to have a Cricut Maker handy. I will include an SVG file for the leaves in my resource library. You can download the template to Cricut design space and set it up to cut the felt.

If you don’t have the Cricut Maker, no biggy, just cut all the pieces by hand. I designed two different leaves and you will need 40 of them all together for 12” embroidery hoop.

If you are using a Cricut machine, you can buy the felt by the yard and cut up into 12” wide pieces. You can find felt already precut. I recommend getting a premium felt that is thicker and better quality.

What you need for DIY mistletoe Valentine’s Day wreath

Let’s learn how to DIY mistletoe Valentine’s Day wreath!

Step 1. Get all the leaves cut out and hot glue gun ready. Start with gluing yarn to the hoop and working it in rounds. Every few rounds glue one leaf to the hoop and keep gluing the yarn around. Make sure the yarn is tightly aligned and glued to the hoop or over the stems.

Arrange the leaves one after the other in a disarrayed pattern to improvise the look of real mistletoe.

Step 2. Glue the pearl beads to some of the leaves and you are almost done!

Step 3. Cut about 10” long piece of yarn, fold it in half and make a knot by the raw ends.

Put the yarn loop on top of the wreath, with the knot up.

Weave the loop under the wreath and pull it tight. It makes a nice loop to hang the wreath.

Step 4. Cut out two heart pieces out of red felt and pin them together.

Stitch the pieces around using the red embroidery floss and a blanket stitch.

Right before finishing stitching, fill in the heart with a bit of fiberfill, just to give the heart a little volume. And then, stitch the opening close.

Step 5. Finally, glue the heart to the bottom of the mistletoe wreath or anywhere on the wreath you prefer. Done!

I love making projects using felt because it’s not only super easy but also quick. One of many pros working with felt is that felt doesn’t fray and stretch. Also, it comes in bright and fun colors.

One of my favorite felt projects is a felt puzzle game that I made for my daughter. It’s fun and educational felt toy to make to entertain kids. If you are looking for more felt home decor projects, you must check my post on DIY felt daisy placemats and coasters or felt apple placemats. Both projects are easy, unique, and practical ideas to make for your home.
