Let’s start with a fleece hat with a flaps sewing pattern! Perfect hat to keep your ears warm!
1. Cut out two ear pieces on fold and two top hat pieces out of the fleece fabric. With right sides together stitch the back edges of the ear pieces. Also, with the right sides together, stitch the top pieces together.
2. Get the ear pieces right side together and align all raw edges. Also, make sure to align the back seams as well. Stitch just the bottom edges of the ear pieces together.
3. Clip some notches on the seam allowance along the curved edges. It will make the curved edges look nice and flat on the right side of the hat.
4. Turn the ear piece right side out and align the raw edges. Use a zig-zag stitch to stitch the edges together. Nicely flatten the seam and topstitch about 1/4″ from the edge.
5. Cut notches on the seam allowance along the curved edges of the top piece of the hat. Turn the piece right side out.
6. Put the top piece and ear piece right side together and align the edges. Also, align the back seam of the ear piece with one seam of the top piece. Stitch the pieces together.
7. Push the ear piece down and make a knot with the slim part of the top piece.
8. To make the flower for the hat, cut the big and small flower templates, first. Next, pin them to the chosen color of fleece fabric. Then, make cuts of the fabric and the templates at the same time. Make sure to follow the lines on templates.
9. Put the smaller flower piece on top of the bigger one and sew a button to the middle. Then, sew it on tho the side of the hat.
Next, let’s learn how to sew fleece mittens! A great addition to the fleece ice skating accessories sewing pattern!
1. Cut two of the mittens pieces out of the fleece fabric. Also, cut two pieces of the 0.25″ elastic. Have the elastic about 1.5″ shorter than the width of the mitten piece.
2. Pin the elastic to one side of the mitten piece and using a zig-zag stitch, stitch the elastic to the wrong side of the mitten piece. Gently stretch the elastic while stitching to the other side of the mitten piece. Stitch the elastic about 1.75″ from the edge.
3. Fold the mitten piece right side together and align the edges. Stitch around except the bottom edge. Then, snip notches on the seam allowance along curved edges.
4. Turn the mitten right side out and fold the bottom edge about 1/2″ to the wrong side. Stitch along the raw edge using a zig-zag stitch.
You can hem the bottom edge before stitching the mitten piece around. It would be easier and faster to finish the project.
But, you’ll have the other seam sticking up and visible from the bottom of the mitten.
5. Cut two small flower templates and pin them to the chosen color of fleece fabric. Follow the lines and cut the template and fabric at the same time. Sew on a button to each of the flowers and hand stitch to the mittens.
Now, let’s learn how to sew fleece leg warmers! Perfect to keep your legs warm while ice skating!
1. Measure your child’s legs from the heel to the mid-thigh and add 3″. Also, measure around the middle of the thigh and add 3″. Cut two rectangles out of the fleece fabric using your measurements. Remember to cut the fabric that the short edges stretch. Fold the leg warmer pieces right side together that the long edges aligned. Then, stitch together.
2. Turn edges on one short side of each leg warmer about 1/2″ to the wrong side. Then, stitch around. You can use a zig-zag stitch to do so.
Repeat the hemming on the other side edges, but turn 1.5″ of the edge to the wrong side. While stitching, make sure to leave about a 1.5″ opening. You can also use a zig-zag stitch for hemming.
3. Cut two pieces of the 0.75″ elastic. An inch shorter than the circumference of the mid-thigh. Next, attach a safety pin to one end of an elastic and push through the wide hem.
4. While pushing the elastic through the hem, make sure not to twist the elastic. Then, have the ends of the elastic overlap about one inch and pin. Using a zig-zag stitch, run the stitch back and forth on the overlapped elastic. Push the sewn elastic inside the hem and stitch the opening close.
5. Follow the tutorial on how to make the fleece flower as for the hat. Make one flower for each leg warmer and hand stitch them close to the wide hem.
And, here is my daughter in her fleece leg warmers, funky hat, and mittens at ice skating class!
