Diy Felt Sugar Skull Mask

DIY felt sugar skull mask is a super easy and fun family project! We had so much fun making these colorful felt sugar masks.

I created the felt sugar mask pattern to make a fun and friendly dress-up for this spooky season. Sugar skulls help celebrate the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). I love that they are not meant to be creepy; instead, they are colorful ways to honor loved ones who have passed away.

Let’s get ready to make a DIY felt sugar skull mask!

To make the sugar skulls I used Kunin felt. What I love about that brand is, that the felt comes in regular and premium quality. So, the premium felt is thicker and not as see-through. Also, it makes bigger felt projects sturdier.

I used the white premium felt for the skull and the regular felt, for decorating it. You can use the 9×12″ sheets of felt or 12×18″ of the white color for the skull. For decorating the skull you can use scraps of felt in desired colors. You are welcome to use a different color of the premium felt than white, be creative!  To make the mask more sturdy, I used regular black felt on the back of the mask. I’m happy to teach you how to make a felt sugar skull mask!

In my resource library, you’ll find four templates for the sugar skull mask. Two are for a child-size mask and two for an adult adult-size mask. Each pair comes with a heart and flower eyes.

Step 1. Cut the skull out of the white premium felt and regular black felt. Make sure to cut out the eye openings, because they will work as reference points. Cut all the decorative pieces and the eyes out of regular felt of desired colors. Using a fabric pencil, mark lines or dots where you’ll embroider teeth.

Pin the little pieces first to make sure that they stay in place.

Using black embroidery thread and a blanket stitch, sew on the black eye piece along the outside edge.

Step 2. Next, blanket stitch the flower piece from the inside of the eye opening. You are stitching through the three layers of the felt pieces. Use matching embroidery thread or a little lighter or darker. You may go with contrasting thread colors.

For the mask with heart eyes,  stitch the black heart piece on the yellow (the color I chose) spike heart piece first. Blanket stitch it on the black heart outside edge.

Then, using a blanket stitch, sew the heart pieces to the skull piece from the inside of the eye opening.

Step 3. Next, stitch on the nose piece.

Using a hot glue gun, glue the decorative pieces to the skull. You are welcome to stitch the pieces on. But, it will be hard to do so because the pieces are very small. Also, make sure, the decorative pieces are about 1/4 inch away from the edge of the skull piece.

Step 4. Align and pin the white skull piece with the black piece. Starting from the left cheek side of the skull, blanket stitch, the two pieces together. Using a straight stitch, embroider the teeth.

Step 4. You can cut the eye openings a little bigger and put a dab of hot glue between the layers right by the edges of the black felt. That way the black felt won’t stick out around the eye openings.

Step 5. Attach the elastic to the sides of the mask on the back side, right by the eyes.  You can do it by stitching it by hand or using a sewing machine.
