I am sure you have a pair or two of old jeans and are struggling to part with them. Upcycle them into fall pumpkin decor. To make the pumpkins look a little whimsical, I sewed the pumpkin pieces left side together using a zigzag stitch. Also, for the stem, I used fragments of the jeans thick seam with the hemp swirled around it. Let’s learn how to make old jean pumpkins, a fun fall pumpkin decor!
Step 1. Gather all materials, cut the pumpkin pieces out of the jeans, and leaf, vine, and bottom pieces out of felt.
Step 2. Pin and sew the pumpkin pieces together, using a zigzag stitch. Sew them one at a time. The size of the zigzag stitch I had set up on my digital Janome machine, was 4.0 to 1.0.
Start sewing the first and last pumpkin pieces together, from the top toward the bottom. Do not sew it closed yet, but leave some space to stuff the pumpkin with fiberfill.
Step 3. Very generously stuff the pumpkin with fiberfill and hand stitch the opening closed. I’ve tried to sew up the opening closed with a machine but it’s hard to fit the stuffed pumpkin under the machine’s foot.
Step 4. Stitch on the felt bottom circle to the bottom of the pumpkin. It will cover the hole. You can use either regular thread or embroidery thread and blanket stitch.
Step 5. Cut about 4 inches long jean’s thick seam to make the stem. For the large pumpkin, you may want to cut a longer piece. Fold it in half, and insert it into the upper hole of the pumpkin. Stitch it around or you can use a hot glue gun.
Step 6. Make a little hole on the bottom of the felt leaf. Cut another felt circle out of the beige color felt, and cut it to make a swirl. That will be the vine for the pumpkin.
Step 7. Cut a long piece of hemp cord and thread the leaf on. You can thread two leaves if you like. Starting from the bottom, wrap the hemp tightly around the stem. Continue wrapping the hemp cord from the top and when close to the bottom, wrap the beginning end of the vine. Make a knot with the beginning and the end hemp behind the leaf and put a dab of hot glue on the knot.
There! You made a beautiful denim pumpkin!
Do you still have some old jeans? Then, use them to make more denim decorations. You may like denim Christmas ornaments or an old jeans pocket wristlet purse.
Happy Upcycling!
