Fabric Angel Ornament DIY

A fabric angel ornament DIY is a beautiful decor idea for your home! It also makes a nice handmade gift idea.

As you may know, I love angels! I had this beautiful paisley quilting fabric in my stash, perfect for my fabric angel ornament DIY project. Fat-quarter fabrics work great for this, angel ornament project. Also, I used wooden bead for the angel’s head. I think it would look more festive to use a pearl bead, but couldn’t find that particular size. This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience (which means if you make a purchase after clicking a link I will earn a small commission but it won’t cost you a penny more)!

What You Need For A Fabric Angel Ornament DIY Project

  • 1″ or 27mm golden color button (for the halo)

Follow my step-by-step tutorial for my fabric angel ornament DIY project

Step 1. Cut two circles out of quilting fabric. Align and pin those circles, right sides together. Stitch around, leaving about an inch and a half opening. And, notch the edges around.

Step 2. Turn the sewn circle right side out and iron it flat. Hand stitch the opening closed. To make it easier, you can use a dab of fabric glue, to glue the opening closed.

Step 3. Use an embroidery needle and thread to gather the circle piece. First, fold the piece in half and mark the middle with a fabric pencil.

Now, use a straight stitch through the middle of the piece, following the marks.

Next, mark the vertical middle of the circle but only the upper half. Use separate embroidery thread to stitch following the marks. Start from the middle.

Step 4. Gather the middle of the fabric circle piece. Tie a knot with the two thread tails to secure the gathering.

Step 5. Now, gather the upper half of the circle piece and thread the wooden bead and button.

Now, thread it back through the other hole in the button and the wooden bead. Leave a 2.5″ loop above the button and make a knot as close to the button as possible.

Push the needle through the middle of the upper gathering to the side below the wing. Tie the thread around the first gathering to secure.

Step 6. Cut about 20 inches of the ribbon and weave it around the waist and wings of the angel. Start with putting the ribbon on the front of the angel. Move the ribbon tails from both sides to the back and cross. Then move the ribbon tails above the wings right by the head to front and cross. Move the ribbon tails to the back again and make a bow.

Use a dab of hot glue or fabric glue to secure the bow. Also, use a tiny bit of glue to secure the head to the torso. That’s how the fabric angel ornament looks on the back. It may work as a front as well.
