Learn how to make felt candle ornament to decorate your Christmas tree! It’s super easy to make Christmas ornaments using felt! Also, handmade ornaments make a great gift!

We are halfway through the year to celebrating Christmas and I think it’s a good time to start making handmade gifts. I already made a Christmas ornament in July, that I wrote about in my recent post on making fabric mushroom ornament. Some of you may remember a Christmas tree candle lights that were clipped to the branches. My grandparents used to decorate their tree with that kind of candle lights and I really liked them. So, I’m sharing with you my tutorial on how to make felt candle ornament that has also a sentimental meaning for me.

When it comes to Christmas, the candlelight represents Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is also known as the Light of the World who takes us from the path of darkness and leads us to the true light. Candles and Christmas lights also remind us that we are to be light to others, to show them the way to Christ. Let’s get ready to learn how to make felt candle ornament!

I really recommend the Cricut Maker machine, especially if you are making items in bulk. It saves you a lot of time! You set it up, the machine cuts the fabric, while you are doing something else. Also, making projects using felt is so easy and fast. Especially because felt fabric doesn’t fray so you don’t have to finish the edges. Also, it’s fun working with felt because it comes in a wide variety of bright colors.

What you need to make a candlelight clip ornament

I’m happy to teach you how to make felt candle ornament!

Step 1. Cut 3.25”x 12” rectangle out of the white felt, flame pieces out of yellow and orange felt, and the wax tray pieces out of gold felt.

Step 2. Arrange the three flame pieces with the yellow piece in the middle.

Step 3. Put the arranged flame on the white rectangle about 0.25” from the short edge. Fold the edge over and roll the felt, getting the flame rolled in.

Step 4. Pin the side edge and hand stitch with matching thread to secure. Do not cut out the thread.

Step 5. Pin the tray pieces to the bottom of the candle and using the same thread hand stitch along the bottom edge of the candle. While stitching, pull the thread to gather the wax trays and secure making a knot on the bottom.

Step 6. Use hot-glue to attach the bottom of the wax tray to the clothespin.

  1. Cute! We actually used LIVE candles on a LIVE tree two Christmases while we lived in Germany while my husband was in the military. Needless to say, we did NOT leave the room while they were burning! This reminds me of that — and I am delighted to be able to reminisce in this way! Thank you!

    • Nancy, I’m happy that I brought back great memories. When I lived in Poland as a little girl I remember my grandparents had plastic candlelights with clips. I really liked them that’s why I made the felt once. They remind me about my childhood and my grandparents.
